Event Heading: Just a Fragment of Old Newspaper Lecture by Dave Wilton
Where it is to be held: The Treasury - 705 Queen Street, Thames
Date of event: 9 August
Event start and finish times: Begins at 1:30pm
Details of what is happening at this event (max 50 words): Join us at The Treasury for the lecture 'Just a fragment of old newspaper' by Dave Wilton on Sunday 9th August at 1:30pm. Entry by gold coin donation.

A chance archaeological find of an old fragment of newspaper on an internal wall of an old Thames house led to a dating of 1868, for the newspaper. This indicates the house is probably about the same vintage, i.e. 1868 +/- a year or so, which means it could date to the first few months of the Thames goldfield.

Historical and genealogical evidence helped identify that the building was used as a shop, by an early Thames family. The history of that family over the next 100+ years was traced, down to current residents of Thames. This is a fascinating story, combining early Thames history, archaeology and genealogy.

Thames Valley Closed Chess Championship in Thames
Hi all I have for the first ever Thames Valley Closed Chess Championship booked the Thames War Memorial Civic Centre Conference Room from 7am to 7pm on Saturday the 21st November Entry to play in our Tournament is FREE .
To be eligible to become the Thames Valley Closed Chess Champion you need to be resident in the area bounded by and included in Thames, Paeroa, Ngatea Te Aroha. Morrinsville and Matamata on the day of the Tournament
So it`s important if you haven`t used a Chess Clock before to think about that I will be coming to Thames with some chess clocks and chess sets that anyone can use to get some practice in a series of friendly games with whoever is onsite at the time I will do this on Saturday the 15th August in the conference room of the Junction Hotel Thames from 11am anyone of course is Welcome.
The following are some other points of interest.
1/ Only players resident in the Thames Valley region on the 21st of November will be eligible to win the Trophy(‘s) and be called the Thames Valley Chess Champion(s).
2/ If we have sufficient interest from Juniors ( 13 and under ) then i will also run a Thames Valley Junior Chess Championship in parallel with the Senior event.
3/ There will be Trophy’s presented to all Champions ( including Juniors) there will be a main Engraved Trophy which the Champion(s) gets to keep for 11months and a smaller Engraved Trophy to keep permanently, of course Photos will need to be taken of all receiving Trophy’s and/or Prize Money.
4/ There will be prize money involved ( amounts yet to be determined) prize money can be won by anyone ( not just residents of the Thames Valley ) whoever finishes with the most points and so on ( 2nd and 3rd) will receive prize money
5/ We will be playing with clocks our time control will be 20 minutes plus a 5 second increment from move 1 for each player
6/ Importantly you need to be committed for the whole day to be in the conference room from at least 9.00am to 5.00pm otherwise there is no point in taking part this is not something you can walk away from (literally) midway through the day ( Saturday) because that would adversely affect everyone else.
7/ There will be absolutely No Alcohol , BYO Food is fine but preferably to eat not to throw around lol.
8/ Our tournament will be a 5 or 6 round Swiss depending on the number of entries .
Any Questions Please ask Expressions of interest are Welcome.
Regards
Ron Lanning
